The ‘Spring Valley’ or ‘Frühlingstal’ derives its name from the fact that spring here arrives incredibly early. It is located in a marshy hollow and extends from the small village of Monticolo/Montiggl downhill in the direction of the Lake of Kaltern (Lago di Caldaro).
In most years by late February the woodland floor is already carpeted with lilac hepaticas, spring snowflake flowers, primroses and other heralds of spring. The circular walk begins in the village of Caldaro/Kaltern. From there, follow the marking no. 5 down to the Wine Road (Wein-Strasse) and along the ‘Mazzoner Wanderweg’ pathway (still marked 5) to the vine-covered hill called ‘Mazzon’, then downhill into a small valley, up the opposite side and finally along a narrow road to Montiggl (1 ½ hours from Caldaro/Kaltern). From there, continue eastward along the trail marked 5, then turn right onto a woodland pathway marked 20. The walk leads gently downhill through the ‘Spring Valley’ following the signs to the ‘Kalterer See’. Follow the marking no. 3 to return from the lake to Kaltern.
