Three at one swoop

The castle triangle in Eppan

Did you know that the area around the picturesque village of Eppan is the area with the most castles in Europe? Not for nothing is this area also known as a burgraviate. There are more than 180 stately residences, romantic fairy tale castles, and imposing fortresses here – some in ruins, some lovingly restored. An easy hike leads you to the three most impressive examples, which is a real highlight especially in autumn and spring.

Starting point for the hike is the village of Missian near Eppan. The trail first leads past Schloss Korb, well-known from films and television. This beautiful castle has been the backdrop for several movies, TV series, and TV shows. The hiking trail leads past vineyards and orchards to the forest where trail number 12 begins and winds up at an impressive chalk tower. An asphalt road leads to Schloss Hocheppan with its impressive chapel. If you look closely at the frescoes, you can recognise the dumpling eater. After a short rest you enter a deep gorge, continue up some steps and take the number 14 forest path to Schloss Boymont. During the Middle Ages this mighty castle already fell victim to fire, leaving only the outer walls which bear witness to its former splendour. The way back leads once again past Schloss Korb back to Missian.
