A refreshing summer holiday in South Tyrol

Cool tips for hot days

The best way to beat the heat? A summer getaway in South Tyrol! We’ve got a few really cool tips on how to beat the high summer temperatures.

Scorching heat in the city. Not a hint of a breeze anywhere. And the children? They’re all competing to see who can whinge the most. Did you imagine your summer would be different? Then come and visit us in South Tyrol, because we know the best remedy. We call it a summer retreat.

Head to the coolest gorge far and wide
The Stanghe/Gilfenklamm gorge is something quite special: it’s made entirely of white marble. Narrow boardwalks and bridges lead right into the heart of it, always following the roaring Racines/Ratschinger Bach river, which has carved its way deep into the rock over thousands of years. Sometimes a waterfall is thundering down right beside you, sometimes the marble is glistening in the sun. The best part: it’s always pleasantly cool here. Why? The high rock faces let hardly any sunlight through, and the splashing water cools the air even further. Nature’s own air conditioning, with no electricity required. Who will be the first to spot the smooth patches where the stream has polished the marble to a shine?

Kneipp therapy at the Fleres/Pflerscher Bach river
Shoes off, trousers up! The “On the trail of water” adventure trail begins right next to the sports ground in Gossensass. This pushchair-friendly walk follows the course of the Fleres/Pflerscher Bach river and is lined with play areas. Right in the middle: a real Kneipp facility. The idea here is to tread water, just as Pastor Kneipp used to do: step by step through the ice-cold water, lifting your leg right out of the water with every step. Like a stork. It’s fun and works wonders. The cold water cools your legs, and because the blood circulates throughout your whole body, you feel refreshed from head to toe. For those who want to feel even more: cross the bridge and turn left to follow a barefoot trail to the Eisenquelle spring.

The height trick
The best cooling trick ever? Just head upwards. For every hundred metres you climb, the temperature drops by a good half a degree. So, hop on the cable car up Ladurns or Mt Cavallo/Rosskopf. And while temperatures in the cities are climbing by the hour, you’re having a great time up in the mountains. Take a thermometer with you: take a reading at the bottom, then at the top. How big is the difference?
