Messner Mountain Museum Ortles (Solda/Sulden)

The Ortles Messner Mountain Museum is located in the village of Solda/Sulden directly beneath the mightiest summit in the eastern Alps, the Ortler and is dedicated to the theme of ice.

Built underground, the museum describes the terrors of ice and darkness, snow people, the power of avalanches and the great ice-clad mountains such as the Ortler, whose glacier is described as “The End of the World” on a 1771 map by Peter Anrich. Here the ice is very immediate.
The museum accommodates an extensive collection of Ortles/Ortler paintings and a large collection of ice climbing apparatus from two centuries. The nearby restaurant ‘Yak and Yeti’ housed in an old Alpine farmstead offers fine food from the Himalayas and South Tyrol, including yak meat.
