Alpine farmers labour in icy winds, blinding blizzards, cloud descending as freezing fog - over the centuries a woollen cloth evolved which was waterproof, protected the wearer from the elements and kept him/her warm.
Originally used for primitive functional clothing such as the traditional ‘Wetterfleck’, a large cape worn by mountain farmers, the material was discovered by genteel society and became the fashionable olive-green clothing worn at the court in Vienna.
Visitors can follow the entire process from shearing, the mysterious fulling process and all the other phases the coarse wool goes through to produce the elegant, highly sought-after clothing we know today. The final stop is the Restaurant Café Lodenwirt.
