Make palm branches with us

A South Tyrolean Easter tradition

Are you all excited for Easter? We have a great craft idea for you to try.

You may still have to wait a little while before you can enjoy your Dolomites holidays in the summer sunshine, but a great way of passing the time is with crafts and games. This year, Palm Sunday falls on 10 April, and here in South Tyrol it’s a tradition to take part in a procession with decorated palm branches (and donkeys are often part of the procession, too!). To prepare our palm branches, we love to hang colourful crêpe-paper strips, Easter eggs, or other decorations on the twigs of the palm branches and wrap the stem in colourful paper, too. We also add catkins and olive branches. The finished palm branches are then displayed in our homes because they’re supposed to ward off bad luck, storms, and hardship. And by the way, did you know that the last person to get up on Palm Sunday gets called the “Palm donkey” for the whole day? Do you also have traditions that Easter just wouldn’t be the same without?
