Experience the mining world!

“Glückauf!”, as the miners would say

Ever been underground? Not yet? Then it’s about time you paid a visit to the South Tyrolean Mining Museum in Ridnaun!

Val Ridanna/Ridnauntal has held a reputation since the 15th century as the most efficient route for transporting lead from Montenneve/Schneeberg, passing over the 2,700m Forcella di Monteneve/Schneebergscharte pass. With the opening of the Brenner Railway in 1867, Ridnaun saw the construction of remarkable industrial and transportation infrastructure. Mining operations in Ridnaun continued until May 1985.
The permanent exhibition at the Mining Museum revolves around the mining heritage of Ridnaun. It showcases personal belongings and private photo collections from miners and their families dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries. Get ready to step back in time as you walk through the old mine complex, immersing yourself in the entire production process and admiring the fascinating machinery from up close. During the tour, you’ll even witness the machines in action, offering a firsthand experience of their functionality. The guided tour takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The tour begins in the show gallery. This is where the mining methods are demonstrated, from hammer and pick to the introduction of dynamite. The remnants of the ore conveyor systems offer a glimpse into the arduous challenges miners faced in transporting ore through the high mountain terrain.
Between May and September, families with children aged 4 to 12 can partake in an interactive tour designed just for them. Little ones can learn more about the mountain’s hidden treasures and how they can be used. Equipped with real miner’s gear, they explore the show tunnel and even experience a typical miner’s shift in a specially designed tunnel section!
Important: Make sure to book your tour beforehand and to wear warm clothing and adequate shoes. Inside the tunnel, expect a temperature of about 8°C. Rain coats and helmets are provided by the museum.
So, head to Rinaun and embark on an awe-inspiring journey through the Industrial Revolution. “Glückauf” – as the miners would say for good luck!
