Along the wine route (Weinstrasse) cycle route from Bolzano/Bozen – Appiano/Eppan – Caldaro/Kaltern)

The area of undulating vineyards to the south of Bolzano/Bozen is South Tyrol’s largest winegrowing area, with the wine route connecting the various picturesque villages. A cycle path has been built along the old railway line from Frangarto/Frangart, ascending to to San Michele/St. Michael in an easy climb.

The starting point is the bridge over the River Adige not far from Sigmundskron Castle and is reached from Bolzano/Bozen along the River Isarco/Eisack cycle path. From the bridge cyclists can opt for the the slightly more demanding gradient up to Sigmundskron and the pretty wine village of Cornaiano/Girlan. Here cyclists can turn left through the vineyards, then left again after a short distance to the Lakes of Monticolo/Montiggl, or continue downhill to St. Michael and on to San Paolo/St. Pauls or Caldaro/Kaltern. Whatever the route it leads past stately homes, through vineyards and orchards. The 14 km route takes around an hour to complete. The return ride is faster, for it is mainly downhill.
