The Marienberg monastery

The Marienberg Abbey was donated by the Lords of Tarasp (CH) in the 12th century. The crypt with its frescoes featuring angels and the portal of the former church with a nave and two aisles date from the original building period.

Around the mid 17th century the abbot Jakob Grafinger had the church rebuilt in baroque style. The monastery building also changed its appearance over the centuries. The latest restructuring work was carried out on the former domestic buildings between 2004 and 2008. The old walls were for the most part left in their original state to create an engaging contrast between old building fabric and modern furnishings.

The exhibition rooms on the ground floor provide insight into monastic life as lived according to the rule of St. Benedict using texts and pictures.
