A hike to the planetarium

Hiking | Yearly | Bolzano & surroundings

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars …

... and oh, so many stars!

Spring is the perfect season to start spending more time out in the fresh air. And it makes it even better when you can learn something at the same time!

That’s exactly what you can look forward to on the planetary trail in Gummer – the perfect destination when you’re staying in accommodation in the Dolomites. Here, during a family-friendly hike through our solar system in 1:1,000,000,000 scale, you’ll discover how far apart our planets are from each other. You’ll also learn a few interesting facts about the Milky Way, our galaxy. The entire hike is around nine kilometres long, but can also be shortened. It starts at the observatory in Obergummer, where you can enjoy stargazing every Thursday evening. The observatory’s large telescope weighs 3,500kg and has a diameter of 80cm, which lets you see 10,000 times better than with the naked eye. You’ll also find the sun telescope here, which lets you look directly at the Sun without damaging your eyes. The planetary trail ends at the planetarium in Gummer village centre, which is open on Thursday evenings and Sundays and where you’ll discover fascinating facts about our solar system and the heavens.
