The Stelvio/Stilfser Joch National Park

The Stilfser Joch National Park is situated in the heart of the Alps, encompassing the entire Ortler – Cevedale massif. Being an Alpine national park it is home to all types of life forms and habitats found throughout the Alps, ranging from the glacier-clad high mountain world at around 3,900 metres (12,800 feet) to the lower valley regions at 650 metres (2,132 feet).

First conceived around 1900, the project of establishing an Alpine protected area was finally realised on 24th April 1935. The park comprises extensive forests and mountain farming land, with mountain farmsteads inhabited all year round, hamlets and villages. In fact the territory of the National Park is characterised by a coexistence of unspoilt natural areas and the man-made landscapes which have developed over centuries of mountain farming.
