Lago di Caldaro/Kalterer See

Thanks to its relative shallowness (18 feet at its deepest point), its location in the sub-Mediterranean south of South Tyrol, and the influence of winds from the south, the Lago di Caldaro/Kalterer See is the warmest lake in the entire Alpine area.

It nestles in a hollow beneath the Dolomite rock massif of the Mendel massif to the west, and a hill surmounted by the ruins of the Leuchtenburg Castle to the east, surrounded by an amphitheatre of rolling hills cultivated with vines, cypresses, laurels and olive trees interspersed with aristocratic wine estates and manor houses.

There are various lidos including the superbly equipped bathing complex which offers countless active pursuits including boats for hire and wind surfing. An easy, well sign-posted walking trail leads around the lake, with plenty of café terraces to relax on and enjoy an ice cream or an aperitif.
