Mountain freshness in the Dolomites: an Alpine hut hike

Summer | Dolomites | Active

A day full of sweet South Tyrolean treats and Alpine bliss

Fancy a hike in the Alpine pastures?

Strolling across sprawling Alpine meadows with your family, listening to the birds, and dreaming of the delicious food in the mountain hut … Does that sound like the perfect day?

The Schmidt family – mum Laura, dad Markus, and little adventurers Sofia and Tommi – have just got up and are enjoying the early-morning view of the Dolomites. They’re planning what they want to do today: Mum wants to visit one of the rustic huts on the Alpine pastures, Dad wants to take some spectacular mountain photos. And Sofia and Tommi? They want to try “Strauben” – sweet, spiral-shaped fritters – with Nutella and just play in the forest, where it’s so nice and cool and there are all kinds of fun things to discover. What makes all these wishes come true? A hike to a mountain hut !

The family sets off on their hike. Along the way, they spot something amazing: There’s a family of marmots scampering around among the rocks. The Schmidts stand there spellbound and listen to the shrill piping of the shy animals – and Sofia can’t believe how fluffy they are!

When they arrive at the hut, they’re given a warm welcome. The kids are in seventh heaven: They’re allowed to visit the goats and – under the supervision of the hut landlord – even feed them. Tommi hesitates a little at first, as he’s a little intimidated by the curious goats – but the encouraging look from the hut landlord encourages him.

After an energising lunch of Knödel dumplings with Speck bacon and the long-awaited Strauben for dessert, the Schmidt family stretches out on the grass. While they relax companionably together, they listen to the sounds of the mountain pasture – the cowbells, the cheerful chatter of the guests, the chirping of the birds.

On the way back, they discuss what they’re going to do tomorrow – how about a visit to Olperl’s Nature Park? It’s a lovingly designed adventure trail on Mt Elmo/Helm, which they can easily reach with the nearby cable car. Here, the children discover a magical world where they follow animal tracks, listen to the mysterious sounds of the forest, and marvel at the diversity of nature.

So, are you ready for your own exciting family holiday?
