On a roll in South Tyrol

Colourful wandering stones

They can be found by the wayside, on benches, and under trees. They are the painted wandering stones who find their way to all sorts of places. Find out more here!

Have you ever come across the mysterious wandering stones that line paths, lie on benches, or hide under trees? No? Then keep your eyes open on your next family hike in South Tyrol, because they can be found everywhere. Wandering stones or “Wandersteine” in German are not a special kind of rock, but lovingly painted stones that accompany hikers wherever they might go on their hiking adventures. This new trend comes from the US and is also finding more and more fans in Europe. It’s no wonder though as these colourful stones turn every hike into an exciting Easter egg hunt of sorts. If you are lucky enough to find one of the colourfully painted specimens, take a photo of it. The name of the Facebook group is written on the back, and they would be happy to receive a photo to post about the stone’s journey. Afterwards, you can take the stone with you and put it in a new place that you love – perhaps it will sit side by side with a stone that you’ve painted in our one of our family hotels in Italy. We'll tell you more mysterious facts about stones during the Familix Nature Programme.
