Are your kids fascinated by authentic farm life? Would they like to experience it first hand? Right this way!

Sara steps through the huge wooden doors into the cowshed. Lots of big pairs of eyes turn to look at her curiously. She feels very small next to the powerful animals, but knows she’s perfectly safe with them in their stalls. Together with farmer Manfred, her parents, and her brother, she moves closer to the animals. Manfred tells them all kinds of exciting things about cows and how he looks after them. Or about the difference between dairy cattle and suckler cattle. Sara is amazed. “Wait, a cow eats 40 to 70 kilograms of fresh feed a day? They’re soooo greedy! And they have to keep chewing it for ages and ages? No wonder they drink so much. But 150 litres of water really is a lot,” she thinks to herself as she follows Manfred through the shed.

There are so many exciting things to experience on South Tyrolean farms, and the animal world has always been a source of fascination for children. That’s why many farmers or host families offer a special family programme, where the children can help feed the animals or collect the freshly laid eggs. And it’s not only the animals that take a lot of work, but the fruit and vegetables do, too. Early summer is time for preparing the vegetable plots, raking the garden, and planting the first lettuces – and the farmer would be happy for your help! These programmes not only promote awareness of the importance of the local economy and nature, but are also great fun.

After all that hard work, it’s time to play. You’ll often find a large adventure playground with swings, slides, climbing frames, and sandpits right next to the family-friendly farms. But the best playground of all has to be nature itself. The kids can climb trees and build shelters while you enjoy the warm early-summer sunshine on comfortable loungers. Family fun for everyone!
