Happy little researchers in spring

Science to experience

In spring, nature transforms into a huge open-air laboratory. Things are growing, blooming, and crawling all over the place. Time to reveal a few secrets – with experiments that are guaranteed to work.

Why? How come? What for? Kids ask a million questions. Spring has the answers – you just have to look for them. So: pack your magnifying glass, head out into nature, and let the exploration begin.

How does a flower drink?
Pick a white flower. Daisies or marguerites are perfect. Pop them in a glass of water and add a few drops of food colouring. Now it’s time to wait. After a few hours, coloured lines start to appear in the petals. Magic? No, capillary action. But for children, it still feels incredibly magical.

The ant experiment
Apple slice on the left, breadcrumbs on the right. Distance: a couple of steps away. Place your bets now! What will the ants find first – sweet or savoury? Where can you see the most hurrying and scurrying? After playing for an hour, you’ll find out the truth. But one question still remains: where are they all actually coming from? Follow the ant trail. If you like, you can mark the path with little stones and pop back the next day to check it out again. Spoiler: the route might have changed.

Reading clouds
Lie down in a meadow and look up at the sky. Fluffy clouds? Good weather. Are they piling up like cauliflower? Something’s brewing. Fuzzy streaks way up high? The weather’s about to change. Children pick up on how to read the weather signs quickly. And when the clouds look like dragons, dogs, or grandma’s hairstyle, then it’s just art instead of science.

Worm hunt
The best time to find creepy and crawly creatures is after a rain shower. Turn a stone over and see who’s living underneath. Earthworms, woodlice, beetles – a whole universe. But why do worms come out when it rains? Because their tunnels are flooding. Don’t forget to put the stone back down. The residents need their roof.
