The Via Claudia Augusta cycle path

The Via Claudia Augusta is an old trans-alpine Roman road which once connected the Adriatic with the Danube plain. After 2,000 years the route once again connects north and south.

The road enters South Tyrol at the Reschen Pass, from where it follows the course of the River Adige along the Val Venosta/Vinschgau valley system to Merano/Meran and on to Bolzano/Bozen. Of course the distance can be accomplished in sections.

It has become very popular to take the Venosta/Vinschgau railway from Merano to Malles/Mals, hire bicycles at the station and return them at Merano station. Here the emphasis is on savouring the scenery and picturesque villages along the route rather than athletic achievement.
