The Marteller strawberry

Spring | Summer | Val Venosta | Culture

Sweet, red, plump: strawberries!

An entire festival is dedicated to them in Val Martello/Martelltal.

Who can resist the bright red, sweet, and juicy strawberries from Val Martello/Martelltal? Taste your way through all the varieties!

Strawberries from Val Martello/Martelltal are known for their sweetness, full flavour, and shiny exterior that immediately makes us think of summer. Anyone who has ever tried these beauties will understand what we’re talking about, because supermarket strawberries can’t compare to the sweet delight of the local bounty. It’s hard to imagine, but in this side valley of Val Venosta/Vinschgau, which lies at 1,300 metres above sea level, in the middle of the spectacular natural landscape with fresh mountain air, this summer fruit thrives. Every year the South Tyrolean Strawberry Festival takes place on the last weekend in June as part of the Martello Strawberry Days. They are the start of the berry season. This year it will take place from 29 to 30 June 2024. The festivities begin at lunchtime on Saturday with the cutting of the giant strawberry cake. In Trattla Park, strawberry farmers from throughout the valley offer their sweet fruits, as well as variations and baked goods. In between there’s always performances and, of course, the berry party. The highlight: Crowning the Strawberry Queen. Children and adults can also look forward to delicious strawberry hikes and e-bike tours, and cooking courses will give you new and fresh ideas how to use this delicious fruit. In the weeks surrounding Strawberry Days, the restaurants in Val Martello/Martelltal offer different strawberry specialities to properly celebrate the sweet berry.
Part of the Strawberry Days also takes place in the southern part of South Tyrol; you can visit the Laimburg experimental centre on the same weekend.
There are still a few weeks until the Martello Strawberry Days and the Strawberry Festival, but it’s a good idea to take a bright red marker and circle this weekend in your calendar and plan your visit. Your family holiday will be sweet! We look forward to welcoming you!
