“Törggelen” in South Tyrol – for the entire family!

Making tradition an experience for children

“Törggelen” is family time! When the wine harvest is celebrated throughout South Tyrol in autumn, children won’t get bored either.

In autumn it's time for “Törggelen” in South Tyrol! Have you ever heard this delicious tradition? In the past, the farming families used to celebrate properly after the grape harvest. A big meal was organised for all helpers, where the new wine – the "Suser" – was finally served. It tastes especially good with roasted chestnuts. The "Keschtn", as we South Tyroleans call them in dialect, should not be missing when Törggelen.

Today “Törggelen” is a feast for the whole family. Local farmers open their traditional parlours and serve all kinds of delicacies that the South Tyrolean cuisine has to offer. In some places, the little ones are allowed to help the farmer carve the chestnuts and then roast them, which is not only exciting and fun, but also makes the autumn fruit taste even better! Another wonderful experience for the whole family is a hike on the Valle Isarco Eisacktal Chestnut Trail, which leads in several stages from Neustift near Brixen over the Ritten plateau to Bolzano.

Another highlight is “Gassltörggelen” in the romantic alleys of the little town of Klausen, which takes place on three weekends in autumn. Dumplings, “Schlutzkrapfen”, cabbage, smoked meat, soup, sweet doughnuts, and much more await you! The South Tyrolean autumn specialities are also available close to your holiday home in South Tyrol.

Have fun törggelen!
