Trauttmansdorff Castle and its famous botanical gardens are situated on a sunny hill on the outskirts of Merano at the foot of a steep slope covered with downy oak. The castle owes its fame above all to Empress Elisabeth of Austria – known affectionately as ‘Sissi’ – who stayed here twice.

A museum documenting the history of tourism in South Tyrol, the ‘Touriseum’ has been accommodated in Trauttmansdorff Castle since 2003. Some of us have been put off by our experiences of museums and expect to find boring displays, collections of exhibits gathering dust or to be subjected to dry and tedious explanations. However this museum is different. There are plenty of attractions for children and places to play in the botanical gardens.
