The Brenner-Bolzano/Bozen cycling path

The pretty Isarco/Eisack Valley can be easily and conveniently explored by bicycle from the state border at Brenner to Bolzano/Bozen. The entire distance is paved and if you start in the north it is more or less downhill all the way.

It is enthralling to observe how the landscape changes, from rather austere at higher elevations to verdant orchards and vineyards with distinctly Mediterranean vegetation in the south. The first small town you come to is Vipiteno/Sterzing, followed by several pretty villages and the fortress of Franzensfeste.

At this point the valley opens up at the monastery of Novacella/Neustift and passes the bathing lake of Varna/Vahrn just north of the former bishop’s seat of Bressanone/Brixen and its magnificent cathedral.

From there it follows the River Isarco/Eisack to the artists’ town of Chiusa/Klausen. The next stage to Ponte Gardena/Waidbruck and Colma/Kollmann requires a modicum of energy though the view of Trostburg Castle is amazing.

From there the cycle path continues to South Tyrol’s capital town Bolzano through picturesque scenery. This is an excellent family ride and can of course be undertaken in several stages.
