Winter wonderland Maria Weißenstein

A leisurely snowshoe hike with a stop at the mountain hut

An easy snowshoe hike leads from the Maria Weißenstein pilgrimage site to the Schönrastalm mountain hut that the owners run with dedication.

You hear a crunching sound under your snowshoes, admire ice crystals twinkling in the sun, and notice how your breath turns to cilly fog in the clear air. During your winter hike in South Tyrol, the winter hiking path from Maria Weißenstein to the Schönrastalm and the Schmiederalm mountain huts leads you through a real-life winter wonderland – while offering you a stunning view onto the snow-covered mountain peaks of the Dolomites and the snowy forests.

On your way, you will pass the cosy Schönrastalm mountain hut where you can warm up your cold fingers with a hot chocolate. If you still have some energy left, you can continue on the path until you reach the Schmiederalm mountain hut (which is closed from mid-December to the end of March).

  • Start and destination: Maria Weißenstein pilgrimage site
  • Length: 6.9km
  • Duration: approx. 1 hour and 45 minutes
  • Altitude difference: 220m
  • Signage: Marking 8 from the monastery, winter hiking path no. 15 from the Pichlwiese meadow to the Schmiederalm mountain hut. Return on the same path.
  • Difficulty: easy

Our Tip: In spring, summer and autumn, a hike from Maria Weißenstein to the year-round open Schönrastalm is worthwhile, too! Don’t miss the delicious treats of the Matzneller family!

We wish you a wonderful day in this fairy-tale landscape!
