Reinhold Messner‘s Mountain Museum (‘MMM’) museum project spread over five locations was initiated to acquaint the broader public with lure of the mountains, their awesome beauty and hostile environments, and the people who inhabit them.
His ‘Firmian’ MMM Museum is accommodated in Sigmundskron Castle overlooking Bolzano and its central theme is the encounter between man and mountain. Messner has collected paintings, sculptures and mementos from his numerous expeditions which are exhibited in superb medieval settings.
To quote Reinhold Messner: “I want to tell exemplary stories about exemplary mountains.” The mountains are subdivided into the Alps (southern round tower) and mountains of the world (in the south-west round tower). The first ascent of a mountain is given prominence just as much as the people whose lives are connected with these mountains.
According to TIME magazine Messner “is not only the greatest high-altitude mountaineer the world has ever known; he is probably the best it will ever know.” Of course there is plenty of space for children to play and let off steam on the castle mound.
