The Naturonda in Val Gardena/Gröden

A huge natural playground

A playground with a view! The Stone City is a magical area and the perfect place for adventure-loving children.

Naturonda is a walk through the enchanting nature in Val Gardena/Grödnertal, close to the family hotels in the Dolomites. The easy, educational hike with a great view starts at Sella Pass leads along the wide trail over gentle hills at the foot of the Sassolungo/Langkofel through the so-called Stone City. This consists of boulders of different sizes, i.e. pieces of rock that slipped off the Sassolungo/Langkofel many thousands of years ago during a rockfall.

In the Stone City you will not only find stones and rocks, but also a big variety of flowers and trees. Moreover, it offers the perfect location for observing different animals, such as the golden eagle, the red fox, or the marmot. If you're lucky, when you go hiking with children in South Tyrol, you'll also see boulderers climbing along the rocks. Your little ones can climb on the smaller rocks, play hide and seek, jump from rock to rock, and much more. Through wooden boards you will learn a lot about the local fauna and enjoy the view of the Sella Group, the Geisler Group, and the Marmolada in the background.

  • Starting and destination point: Car park at the Sella Pass
  • Trail length: approx. 2.4km
  • Duration: approx. 1 hour
  • Difficulty level: easy
  • Best season: From June until September

Our tip: If you want to lengthen the trip, you can continue on the trail until you reach the Emilio Comici mountain hut. There, the Marzola Family will pamper you with typical South Tyrolean specialties, seafood, and Mediterranean delicacies.
