Chestnut trail (Keschtnweg)

Sweet chestnuts are called ‘Keschtn’ in South Tyrol. Massive gnarled old chestnut trees are a prominent feature on the hillsides overlooking the Isarco/Eisack River, where a favourite walking trail is named after this delicious autumn fruit.

It makes for a delightful walk whatever the season but is especially attractive in autumn, when the delicious fruit can be savoured along the way.

An especially attractive part of the ‘Keschtnweg’ leads from Varna/Vahrn near Bressanone/Brixen up on to the Renon/Ritten mountain with plenty of country inns offering seasonal refreshments along the way.

Starting point: the Lake of Varna/Vahrn
Finish: Runkelstein Castle
Length: 60 km (accomplished in 6 daily stages)
Difficulty rating: depending on stage, easy to medium
