At Racines/Ratschings close to Vipiteon/Sterzing the Gilfenklamm provides a unique natural spectacle and it is impossible to enter the ravine - in places extremely narrow with sheer high walls - without being impressed by the awesome forces of nature. This is the only gorge worldwide which is cut into pure white marble, though the surface of the rock has become dark in colour with a greenish sheen in places through erosion. It is mesmerising with overhanging marble walls, numerous waterfalls, pools in troughs scooped out of the rock, and the deafening roar of the wild cascading water. An easy secured trail leads provides a safe passageway through the gorge with steps and scenic bridges.
Walking time: Uphill through the ravine from Stange to the Jaufensteg 45 to 60 minutes; downhill approx. 40 minutes
Elevation gain: 200 m
