Archaeological Museum

How did people live 5,000 years ago? What did they eat and wear, and what daily tasks did they have to deal with? Archaeology is a fascinating science which delves into how people lived in the distant past.

Visitors to the South Tyrolean Archaeological Museum embark on a journey back in time. The museum documents the history of South Tyrol going back 15,000 years, starting with the first traces of human activity from the Stone Age through the Bronze Age and Iron Age up to the Roman era and the early Middle Ages (800 AD).

A visit to ‘Ötzi’, the 5,300 year-old Copper Age ‘Man from the Glacier’ who has an entire floor dedicated to him, his clothing, tools and weapons found alongside his remains is an absolute must.

Children’s activities are also organised to deepen their experience. An accurate reconstruction of Ötzi is on view and the museum has its own family room for children to play in. Audio guides in various languages (English, German, Italian, Spanish and French) enrich the visitor’s experience of the museum and provide detailed information on Ötzi the Man from the Glacier, and South Tyrol’s past.
