Ines - 31 yearsOur family weekend in South Tyrol’s Antholzer Valley

Not what we expected...

…but much, much more. Let’s begin however with what we certainly were NOT expecting. Our “relaxed weekend” adventure began just three streets down the road from home, with a truck that less than gently nudged our car, fully laden with offspring and suitcases. No serious damage was done, though, except perhaps to the holiday mood.

Sometimes you don’t need much. But we got it anyway
We arrived at the Family Resort Garberhof (LINK: http://www.dolomit-familyresort.it/). Sometimes it doesn’t take much to set the world to rights again. A friendly look; a swimming pool at just the right temperature behind the glass façade; an excited toddler who decides that “his” family hotel is super cool before we even enter our room; and a lobby with beautiful features, cosy nooks and a stylish hotel bar where we could expect drinks à deux. In order to put a stop to the endless “when-are-we-going-swimming-when-are-we-going-swimming” mantra, Mummy was obliged to let Daddy jog off to explore the area alone.

Emil and I enjoyed a soothing warm pool with plenty of attractions to discover: bubbling water jets and a glass partition past which we swam – once with and once without water wings – and out through clouds of steam and into the open air.

Me and you. Me and me.
Make time for what is most important for you: how often do you manage to enjoy the company of your child in peace and quiet when faced with the hustle and bustle of everyday life?
But being completely alone also has its benefits. The sauna received me with its warm, open arms: I had it to myself. With a sigh I cuddled up in the healthy heat and thought of nothing other than my own breathing, surrounded by soft lighting and the scent of wood.

Eating – a true pleasure.
Getting ready together for dinner can be lots of fun: bathing, drying your hair, rummaging around and putting on your make-up in the room. And, once we entered the dining room and read off the menu, we knew we were doing the right thing, because that sort of food deserves to be appreciated – especially if it tastes as good as it sounds. A tuna fish variation, a wonderful fillet steak with vegetables, a beautifully presented salad buffet and a dessert so good we were stunned into silence. And after a second glass of equally excellent wine, I was praising the cooking as well as every waiter and waitress who came to our table simply to make sure that my compliments were also conveyed to the chef.

Yes, all three of us are gourmets. And, because children at the Hotel Garberhof do not just get served French fries but eat as well as the grown-ups, nothing was left on the plate, not even out of politeness. Eating is a true pleasure.

Enjoy your trip
If Dad wants to go skiing, Mum would rather go snowshoeing and Emil simply wants to play, you have two choices. Either to make use of the 1,000 or so play areas and opportunities and the hotel’s childcare, so that everyone gets what they want: or go sledging. Because EVERYBODY loves tobogganing: it’s good exercise for Dad as he pulls the sledge uphill with the little one on board, there is an idyllic landscape and relaxation for Mum, and pure fun for our bundle of joy. When I say all three of us loved it, I have to say that we had a marvellous trip to the Steinzger hut, followed by a trip of a rather different kind, headfirst into the snow. The schnapps was to blame.

We take it easy…
How did we notice that we were totally relaxed and had fully recuperated? Well, we did not give the rear-end collision a second thought for the whole two days until it was time to return home. We were standing in the garage by the car and Dad simply grinned. “Take it easy”, he said. “It’s only a car.”
