Barbara - 52 yearsA weekend away with teens

A stay at a Familienhotel with teens?

The hotel, highly recommended, had told me: “We look forward to seeing you. Make sure you arrive in good time so you can enjoy everything in peace!” I too was looking forward to our visit, not least because it offered plenty of space for wannabe adults to enjoy. “What do I need with a kids’ club?” asked my 13-year old daughter. I was thus somewhat concerned whether it would be possible to enjoy a stay in a Familienhotel with two teenagers.

Getting off to a good start is half the battle
Our bags were ready and packed, we could set off. By “we” I mean myself, my 13-year old daughter and her friend of the same age, whose only thought on the way there was listening to music. The green hues of the landscape, the clear air and blue skies brought only bored sighs of “Ye-es” from the girls. That’s how it is.

We were warmly welcomed and immediately decided on a tour to discover the hotel. Tour is the right word when speaking of the Ehrenburgerhof, the lead establishment of the Falkensteiner hotel chain. We passed through the hotel itself via the breakfast terrace and into the Asia garden with its fitness boat, ventured further into the extension which houses saunas and an indoor swimming pool, then on to the sunbathing lawn with its adventure playground located on the other side of the lake. Yes, that’s right, the hotel structure is built around a small natural lake. This is where Maria Falkensteiner opened her lido and pension in 1957, right next to the small Ehrenburg station. For a car-free holiday it couldn’t be better!

The lake, or pirates ahoy
The girls could not bear to leave the adventure playground, trying out every slide and rope bridge. How wonderful to be a child once more. But what’s that over there?! A raft, we have to have a go on that! And soon I am being pulled across the lake by two hardworking sailors. Ship ahoy!

Veit the entertainer
In the evening we make plans for the following day. Veit, who has offer a wealth of suggestions, is animation personified. But even the term animation does not tell the whole story: he practically exudes joie de vivre. Once he starts talking about the guided walks and activities available each day, I begin to regret that we are only staying for one weekend; I would happily have joined in every one of them. Being a kid again appeals to me too!

The Astjoch, or flowers galore
The path up to the Astjoch pass leads first through forest, then over fields of Alpine roses and enchanting flowery meadows. The steep ascent is followed by a downhill and we find shelter from the rain in the Starkenfeld hut. I am amazed by both the ambience and the menu here! I had certainly not expected to find fungal-resistant wines and lamb lights being served. The hut and cheese dairy have been run since May 2016 by four young men: their enthusiasm can both be sensed and tasted. I will definitely be returning!

Patrizia, or the surprise
Once back at the hotel we go for a relaxing dip in the indoor pool and I explore the sauna. But my biggest surprise comes on the way to our room as we take a look at the Acqua Pura Spa and its offers. Two pairs of teenage eyes light up at the sight of said offers and look hopefully at me. Yes, they got their massage and floated contentedly back through the hotel: a consequence of masseuse Patrizia’s soothing hands!! Well, so long as they belong to her even the most anxious father can sleep in peace. ;)

The weekend was over all too quickly, and the two girls would also have had nothing against enjoying a few more days – and spa treatments – there. True pleasure is not a matter of age or youth. As for me, I simply thought: “Family days with teenagers are possible at a Familienhotel!” My thanks are due to the Hotel Lido Ehrensteinerhof!
